Quincy Crutchfield, Designer of Sins&Virtues Lifestyle Interview

As our biggest event ever- La Femme- nears, everything seems to be falling into place, literally. Thanks to Quincy Crutchfield, the up-and-coming designer of Sins&Virtues Lifestyle,  great necklaces, earrings, and bracelets will be seen cascading down our models' bodies as they strut down the runway on April 15.

We've posted some images featuring Sins&Virtues designs, in addition to sitting down with the designer himself, to get your just as pumped about his jewelry as we are!

Hemline: What made you decide to start designing Sins&Virtues Lifestyle?
Quincy Crutchfield: It began as a “hmm let me see if…” I had a rosary that I really liked when I was younger, and I lost it.  So, one day I thought I could probably make one.  I had a friend text me the pieces I needed while I wandered through Hobby Lobby and Michaels, found the pieces, and went home and got to work… and the fascination with designing jewelry began!  Now, however, all of my pieces are made from a combination of vintage pieces I find and new materials.

H: Sins&Virtues Lifestyle seems like a pretty loaded name; what's behind it?
QC: The core meaning is simple and one of the mottos for the line… we are good, we are bad, we are only human.  No one is perfect but yet we try to achieve some form of perfection.  Also it just articulates the fight between good and evil, and which side we allow to be most evident in our lives.  Digging deeper into why I named my line Sins&Virtues, I would say it is because all of my designs have duality to them.  Especially my clothing designs.  The tag line for my jewelry says that “our beauty is in our imperfections” and again it ties in with Sins&Virtues because we do have flaws (sins), but we also are beautiful in those flaws because we have virtues that we strive to make more prevalent and do good things. I view creativity as a gift and a curse, as well. I love painting, drawing, and designing so much while I’m doing it, but once it’s done there is a constant struggle to duplicate the beauty of the creation or to make the creation better. Also I just like the name because it sounds cool!

H: Where do you draw inspiration from?
QC: Literally everything!  It could be my environment at the moment, music, art, television, random lyrics from poetry, or anything in between. It’s weird sometimes because I will be in the middle of something and then all of a sudden I get an idea, and I have to put it on paper right then.  Even when I sleep, I will get ideas and have to get up to sketch them.   My friends think I’m crazy sometimes because I’ll totally zone out when I get new ideas but talk about them out loud.  One of my coworkers said I should mention that I zone out in staff meetings as well and doodle designs. I still hear what’s being said, though!

H: What kind of woman wears your jewelry line?
QC: I don’t really design for a specific demographic because my pieces are more like art.  I just design and create them with a vision in mind.  Also I don’t just design jewelry for women, I also have pieces for men.  Women’s jewelry is just more fun.  I’ve designed jewelry for females anywhere from the age of 2 all the way 80+ years old.

H: As a man, what equips you to understand what women want to accessorize with?
QC: Definitely my abilities to observe and listen.  I also have friends that I bounce ideas off of and let them get the first peek at new designs.  I also like the “try and see” method; I’ll make something and see what kind of a response it gets.  Another asset is probably my ability to learn- from my mistakes, from others, and just to learn in general.  I love fashion, so I pay attention to it and just see what’s new and what people are wearing, then put my own twist on it!

H: What's in store next for fans of Sins&Virtues Lifestyle?
QC: CLOTHING!  I already have some t-shirts, scarves, sweatshirts and hoodies floating around but I look to fully launch my website and clothing line in October of this year.  So add Sins&Virtues as a friend on Facebook, and you will always be current on what is going on with that.  Sins&Virtues started solely as a clothing line, the jewelry was a byproduct.  There is a TON of stuff in store for fans of Sins&Virtues, but I can’t let the cat out of the bag just yet on some things.  I have to keep you guessing.

H: Where can customers find your jewelry?
QC: They have to get it directly from me!  My website is on the way though, which will make it a lot easier, but even then I don’t want to totally lose the interaction with the customer.  Especially since all my pieces are one of a kind, and I tailor them to the person and their style.  7Sins7Virtues@gmail.com, Twitter.com/SinsAndVirtues, or facebook.com/Sins7Virtues are the best ways to keep in touch with me!

Looks Like It's Going to Be a Yellow Year!

(Pringle of Scotland, Alexander McQueen, Wunderkind)

So, yellow is supposedly THE COLOR of the year. Yes, you heard right. Not this month, not this season, but the YEAR! And the good news is that it comes in all sorts of shades, patterns, and fits that will flatter any skin tone, style, and body!

First, we have MM Couture ruffle shoulder dress that seems to be flying off the racks at the store! The perfectly cinched waist, darker yellow color, and A-line skirt make it easy to dress up for an evening gathering, dress down with flips, or professionalize with tights and a belt for the office. The all-around go-to dress!

Second, Hemline is carrying a dare-you dress (or even tunic if you're leggy!) from Voom for anyone who's not trying to blend in. The beautiful detailing on the front doubles as a built-in necklace and extends to the back for an interesting look from all angles. The bell-sleeves will entice anyone who's a little shy about their arms and the cinched waist keeps this look from becoming baggy.

And last, we have a light, airy number from Trina Turk. This dress is the dream come true for anyone who has a baby shower, wedding, or Spring holiday event to attend. The yellow and white flower print brings a young perspective to a dress that could risk seeming a bit matronly. The higher waist works well with anyone who is feeling tummy or hip self-conscious.

Floral!

(Trina Turk, Alexia Admor, Free People, Free People)

Florals for spring is by no means groundbreaking, so we're not even going to try to sell it to you as a new and exciting trend. BUT if something keeps popping up season after season, year after year, it has to mean it's doing something right, right?

This spring, Hemline is bringing you the full spectrum of floral prints! Trina Turk brought out a beautiful lime green and purple graphic floral print perfect for anyone not a fan of the tradition paisley print. Alexia Admor sent a super-girly frock in brown, purple, and white that would perfectly serve a plethora of summer activities and easily transition into fall with a cardigan. Free People, as always, cooked up a ton of short, strappy dresses that make dressing for spring and summer effortless. Both dresses rise above the rest of summer's go-to dresses with their perfect detailing (left: twisted back, right: metal stud empire waist).

The first day of spring was just a few days ago; don't let another day go by without the perfect little dress! Stop by Hemline today!

Same Concept, New Style

(Paul & Joe, Oscar de la Renta, Diesel, and Project Runway designer)
The little black dress is a staple in fashionista's closets around the world. Coco Chanel told us it was the must-have decades ago, and in 2010, Diesel, Oscar de la Renta, and Paul & Joe are telling us it's still in style. However, these dresses aren't your grandmother's little black dresses. These dresses have pizazz! embellishment! and one even comes with a belt! Today we're showing you 4 of our favorite little black dresses, inspired by the Fall 2010 runways, now available at Hemline.

First up we have a sweet, simple little number from Aaron Ashe. The go-to designer for minimalism, this designer knows how to keep it clean... and interesting. The scalloped layer extends from the back to the front resulting in an uncomplicated yet appealing detail. The cinched, elastic waist gives this dress extra shape and makes it easy to fit lots of different body types.

Next we have the super-girly, frills and bows dress from a somewhat unexpected source... Nicole Miller! Miller, known for ruched, body-hugging cocktail dresses, surprised us all with this flouncy, fun baby doll cut. The higher waist, detailing on the bodice and full skirt make the dress perfect for a plethora of occasions. Dress it up with heels and sophisticated jewelry for a cocktail party, or pair with a long cardigan and motorcycle boats for an edgier, rock star kinda night!

(Aaron Ashe, Nicole Miller, Yoana Baraschi, Yoana Baraschi)
Third, we have the dress you could take over the world in and it comes from the designer who's pretty much already managed to do so... Yoana Baraschi. This sleek little number could easily move from the office to after hours by simply removing your blazer. Perfect for a women who's in control, in demand, and ready to show off her rockin' figure! BONUS! Comes with a belt you know you'll detach and start wearing with everything else because it's the perfect little black belt!

And last we have another body-lovin' number from Yoana Baraschi, but this time it's all about TEXTURE! The little black flowers on this dress take it from being over-the-top tight and tantalizing and bring it down to a level that allows you to show off your shape but maintain a sweetness you thought disappeared long ago. Sweet and sensual, this dress works easily during the months when you don't usually think about wearing black.

A Match Made in Heaven...

We've always been in love with Birdies. They have a seemingly-endless parade of bras, panties, and other underpinnings that make you swoon, gasp, and squeal with delight. Not only that, but the two ladies who own the shop are the sweetest peas you'll ever encounter, and you'll soon find yourself giggling together as if you've been friends all your life.

So when we heard they were one of the sponsors for our upcoming event, LA FEMME, we couldn't have been more ecstatic! Hemline's high-fashion and Birdies' soft sensuality... with our power's combined... just kidding. There will be no Captain Planet references in this space. But seriously, we couldn't have imagined a better boutique to contribute all the sexy little things to be featured alongside our clothing.

If you haven't been to Birdies, you really really should stop by. It's not often we'd tell you to shop somewhere else, but we must make an exception! Visit their website to learn more, get directions and hours, or begin the romance we promise is going to last a lifetime.

And just in case there's any doubt about you jumping over there, here's a little teaser stripped right from their website:

Our store is a little over 100 square feet with a comfortable dressing room in back. Our garments are displayed in vintage Bitterman's candy cases and we hang individual pieces on our walls. We are a great place to treat yourself, a friend, a daughter or sister, a bride-to-be, your partner, a nursing mother, your mother, you name it! We work hard to have something for everyone.

Our store is very guy-friendly so don't be afraid to stop by if you are one. Go ahead and send your boyfriend or husband our way for birthdays, Valentine's Day (our birthday!), and anniversaries. We are patient and  helpful to all of our customers. Thank you for supporting our small, local, and independent business!

We See London, We See France...

Hemline is loving the new super-sheer trend we saw all over the runways at the past few weeks of fashions shows. Dolce and Gabbana, Rodarte, and Tory Burch were just a few of the designers who sent looks down the runway that might make your grandmother blush...And while you'll be making your grandmother's cheeks slightly rosy, you'll be turning heads all over town, too!

The key to wearing sheer is to keep it classy with ultra-feminine prints, classic cuts, and subdued fabrics. That's why we loved the above looks so much! Whether paired with a cute mini or slacks, the sheer tops still exude a sexy sophistication.

Inspired by the three looks above, we've brought a few sheer items into our collection as well. From left to right, we have Free People white lace top, Free People orange blossom tank, and Kensie green blouse. These pieces will easily transition immediately into your spring and summer wardrobes with a lightweight cardigan thrown on top and a sweet bandeau or bra-lette underneath.

Need to talk a little bit more before you are ready to hop on the sheer bandwagon? That's alright! Stop by Hemline on the Plaza and we'll walk you through it...

Meet Chester French!

So, as you may or may not recall, we're having an event soon called LA FEMME and we are super pumped about it. We can't wait for all the fashion, food, and fun that it sure to be had by all! But there's something else we're excited about, too. We're really excited that these Harvard students of years past who enjoy wearing bow ties and fur shrugs are also going to be there!

No, no! They're not models, silly. They're in a band. A band called Chester French who's going to be performing at LA FEMME! So, if you would like to a take a little listen to the beats we'll be rockin' come April 15, CLICK HERE! In the meantime, here's a little info about about "D.A." Wallach and Maxwell Drummey, right from the horse's mouth, as they say.

Chester French has played hundreds of shows with its three piece backing band, touring the US and Europe as a headliner or with Blink 182, Weezer, N*E*R*D, Common, or Lady Gaga. D.A. and Max have also made a point to connect with their supporters through free, intimate acoustic performances in dozens of sneaker shops and record stores around the U.S. Their relentlessly energetic and engaging sets have won fans of a variety of styles of music, and the group’s audiences are as diverse as its sound.

In April of 2009, Chester French released its highly-anticipated debut album, Love the Future, which has received broad critical acclaim. People Magazine’s Chuck Arnold called it “a delightfully whimsical pop pastiche that evokes everyone from the Beach Boys and the Beatles to Prince,” and the Boston Globe hailed the release as “too wise – and too catchy – to possibly be the debut from the recent Harvard grads.”
Stay tuned from here on out because we're going to be featuring even more of the great people involved in our upcoming event soon!
